The Insider’s Guide to Booking During Wave Season 2026

Wave Season 2026 · Booking Guide

“Wave season” is the cruise industry’s term for January through March, the peak annual booking window driven by everyone planning travel right after the new year. Nearly every major line runs its heaviest promotions of the year during this stretch, including MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Here’s how to actually take advantage of it.

Know What the Deals Really Are

Wave season promotions are rarely straight price cuts. More often they’re onboard spending credit, complimentary Wi-Fi or a beverage package thrown in, or a reduced deposit, sometimes as low as $50 to hold your cabin. None of that is bad, but it means you need to compare your total out-of-pocket cost, including port fees and what you’d realistically spend onboard anyway, rather than just the size of the advertised discount.

Book Early for the Cabins That Matter

Popular cabin types, mid-ship balconies and solo studios especially, sell out fast during wave season specifically because everyone else is booking at the same time. If you have a specific cabin location in mind, don’t wait to see if the deal improves; the inventory disappearing is the bigger risk.

Read the Cancellation Terms

A lot of the deepest wave season fares are non-refundable. That’s a fine trade if you’re certain about your dates, but it’s worth pricing in travel insurance if there’s any real chance your plans change.

Make Sure the Perks Match How You Actually Cruise

An included beverage package is only a deal if you drink enough to use it. Before you pick a promotion based on the perks attached to it, check that those perks are ones you’d actually use, otherwise you may be better off with a lower fare and no add-ons.

Where to Look for 2026

This year’s new-ship buzz, Icon of the Seas and the newly launched Disney Adventure among them, is pulling a lot of demand toward Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean for 2026 sailings. A travel advisor can also get you access to group rates and unpublished promotions that don’t show up on a cruise line’s own site, which is worth a quick call even if you plan to book yourself in the end.
